Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC)
You've probably noticed a distinctive smell when using many household products. These odours are commonly caused by VOC emissions.
What are VOCs?
Volatile Organic Compounds [VOCs] are emitted as vapours or gases from a wide range of chemicals (both solid and liquid). In fact, most human-made and naturally occurring odours are actually of VOCs. However, some VOCs are dangerous to human health or cause harm to the environment, and in extreme cases are even regulated by law - especially indoors - where concentrations are typically the highest.
Exposure
You will most likely encounter VOCs every single day, as they are present in a wide range of products. Household items that emit VOCs can include paints and coatings, adhesives, synthetic fabrics, cleaning agents, scents and sprays. VOCs can also result from personal activities such as smoking. All of these products can release organic compounds while you use them, and some, even while they are stored.
VOCs in the Home
Many building products emit VOCs that ‘off-gas’ into the surrounding air. The indoor air quality of a home is typically most at risk. However, most off-gassing occurs when products are new and / or freshly installed and can lessen over time.
Because adverse health symptoms are slow to develop and exposure to air quality pollutants can vary greatly, few specific VOCs have been studied in detail. Further, the level of VOCs in a home can vary greatly, not only over time but also from room to room, especially if new products are frequently introduced.
